New Year's Day 2014: Alexandria Closures, Service Changes

There will be no residential trash and recycling collection on Wednesday. Jan. 1 in Alexandria backing up pickup for the remainder of the week.

All city of Alexandria government offices will be open on New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 31.

City government offices will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1 in observance of the New Year’s Day Holiday.

Here’s a look at closures and schedule changes provided by the city:

Health Facilities — The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will close at noon Dec. 31. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be open on Dec. 31. All facilities will be closed on Jan. 1.

Hotlines — All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline, 703-746-4911, the emergency services hotline for mental health or substance abuse crisis, 703-746-3401; and the sexual assault hotline,703-683-7273.

Libraries — All Alexandria Library branches will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.

Museums — All museums operated by the city of Alexandria will be open on their regular schedules on Dec. 31 with the exception of the Archaeology Museum, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All museums will be closed on Jan. 1. For more information, call 703-746-4554.

Parking — On Jan. 1, Alexandria police will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, as well as time restrictions in residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits. Meter payments are not required on Jan. 1.

Recreation Centers — On Dec. 31, Alexandria neighborhood recreation centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Chinquapin Recreation Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center will be closed. All city of Alexandria recreation centers will be closed on Jan. 1.

Refuse Collection — Residential trash and recycling will be collected on Tuesday, Dec. 31. There will be no collection scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 1. Residential trash and recycling normally scheduled for Jan. 1 and 2 will be collected one day later. Residents who receive city refuse collection may place Christmas trees at the curb for recycling on regular trash collection days, from Monday, Jan. 6 to Friday, Jan. 17. Trees set out before that time will be collected as regular refuse and will not be recycled. The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Collection site (3224 Colvin St.) is open on Dec. 31. For more information, visit the city’s Solid Waste website.

Schools — All Alexandria City Public Schools are closed through Jan. 1 and will reopen Jan. 2.

State Offices — The Alexandria Circuit Court and the Alexandria DMV Office (2681 Mill Rd.) will be closed Jan. 1; General District Court will close at noon Dec. 31 and remain closed on Jan. 1; the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Transit — DASH will operate a regular weekday schedule on Dec. 31, with the addition of extended Trolley service for First Night Alexandria. There will be no DASH service on Jan. 1 except for the King Street Trolley.

Trolley — On Dec. 31, the free King Street Trolley will begin at 11:30 a.m. and provide shuttle service for First Night Alexandria until 1 a.m. On Jan. 1, the trolley service will operate on its normal schedule, every 15 minutes between the King Street Metrorail Station and the Potomac River waterfront from 11:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m.
