Alexandria Thanksgiving Weekend Schedule of Services, Facilities

Parking meters will not be enforced in Alexandria on Black Friday.

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Here’s a look at closures and schedule changes provided by the city:

Refuse Collection — Residential trash and recycling will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of Thanksgiving, including Thanksgiving Day. On Thanksgiving Day, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 a.m. in order to clear routes early for the annual Alexandria Turkey Trot.

Health Facilities — The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27 and remain closed on Nov. 28 and 29. The Teen Wellness Center (3701 W. Braddock Rd.) will be closed Nov. 28 and 29.

Historic Alexandria — All museums will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28. On Nov. 29:  the Alexandria Black History Museum and the Friendship Firehouse Museum will be closed, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and The Lyceum will be open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hotlines — All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline, 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline, 703-746-3401; and the sexual assault hotline, 703-683-7273.

Libraries — All Alexandria library branches will be closed on Nov. 28 and 29.

Parking — The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, as well as time restrictions in residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Nov. 28 and 29.  

Recreation Centers — All city recreation centers, including the Chinquapin Recreation Center, will be closed Nov. 28. Chinquapin will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 29. The Charles Houston, Cora Kelly and William Ramsay recreation centers will open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 29. All other neighborhood recreation centers are closed. The Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 29.

Schools — The Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed Nov. 27 through Nov. 29.

State Offices — The Circuit Court will be closed on Nov. 28 and 29. General District Court, the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, will close at noon on Nov. 27, and will remain closed on Nov. 28 and 29.  Department of Motor Vehicles Office at 2681 Mill Road will be closed Nov. 28 and will reopen Dec. 2.

Transit — Alexandria Transit Company’s DASH bus service will not operate on Nov. 28. The King Street Trolley will begin operating at 6 a.m. and run every 15 minutes until 10:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29.
