GoFundMe: Mike's Guardian Angel Project

GoFundMe, a web platform that allows people to raise money for everything from class trips to accident and illness recovery efforts, has teamed with Patch to highlight local giving opportunities in communities across the country.

Despite chronic illness and disability, Alexandria resident Mike Davis keeps keeps an eye over homeless men and women in and around the city.

A deacon at Commonwealth Baptist Church in Rosemont, Davis doesn’t have much to call his own. He finds work refinishing furniture and performing other odd jobs when he can and when his health allows.

But his limited income and declining health hasn’t stopped Davis from helping others as much or as often as he can.

The 56-year-old Alexandria native’s personal history with homelessness and his ongoing assistance efforts were recently profiled in the Alexandria Times.

Donna Walker James, who has helped Davis through the years, started a GoFundMe page to help Davis pay his rent, utilities, food and medical expenses to keep him in good enough shape to keep helping others.

“He wants to do more to help and to bring together members of the community to help support this work,” James wrote on the page she established for Davis. “Mike delivers food, coats, blankets, tents and medical supplies to people in need, soliciting donations from churches and individuals, purchasing supplies himself with his limited income, and writing letters to far-flung companies requesting donations, which he has received from as far away as Minnesota.”
