Capoeira (Brazilian martial art) at Del Ray Artisans

Date/Time: Thursday, July 10, 6-8pm
Instructor: Jose Canchan & Elif Uncu
Fee: $10

A kick, a dodge, a cartwheel, a song... Come and learn from the beginning about the uniquest of martial arts, Capoeira. Brought to Brazil by slaves from Africa, this art form has a 400 year old history that anchors it even as it is showcased today in mainstream movies and commercials. With millions of practitioners worldwide, it is a sport beloved by those who practice it.

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins, and highly mobile techniques.

For the first time at Del Ray Artisans, you will get to learn the basics from Instructor Jose Canchan who has been training Capoeira for the past 11 years. He will introduce the attendees to the history and story of capoeira, explaining how it has evolved as a style while giving people the chance to try it for themselves. Attendees will be taught some simple kicks, dodges, acrobatics, and how to play a basic game of "call and response" while clapping and singing to music (in Portuguese!). This workshop is for people of all abilities, and will be paced for absolute beginners. So have no fear, and come and have what is sure to be a new and unforgettable experience!
