Weekend Planner: Fall Harvest Family Days, History and More

Some suggestions for your weekend in and around Alexandria.

Where: Friendship Firehouse Museum, Alexandria
When: 1 p.m. Saturday
Why Go: Learn about the lives of firefighters in Union-occupied Alexandria during the Civil War. The walking tour will visit four of the five local firehouses from that era.
Price: Adults $6, children ages 10 to 17 are $4. Reservations required.

Where: Carlyle House Historic Park, Alexandria
When: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday
Why Go: Reenact John Carlyle’s funeral, including a procession to the Old Presbyterian Meeting House and mock internment at the cemetery. The Historical Haunts Tour will run every 15 minutes leaving from Market Square.
Price: Tickets are $15 per person.

Where: George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Alexandria
When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.on Saturday and Sunday
Why Go: Featuring wagon rides, wheat-treading demonstrations, straw bale maze, apple-roasting, period entertainment and more. Enjoy a Potomac River cruise at half price this weekend only.
Price: Adults $15, children ages 6-11 $7, children under 5 are FREE.

"Cantorial"

Where: The Little Theatre of Alexandria
When: 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (shows run through Nov. 17).
Why Go: This humorous and heart-warming story, written by Ira Levin, is about a couple who renovate an abandoned synagogue only to find it haunted by the synagogue’s late cantor.
Price: Tickets are $20.
