Week in Review: Outdoor Seats, Home Prices and Speck

A look back at the week that was.

On Monday, we published a story about the Evening Star Cafe pursuing a permit to allow 30 new outdoor seats. Readers left more than 25 comments on the story, including many about parking concerns.

We learned on Tuesday that . In the Del Ray area, the average listing price for residences in the 22301 ZIP code was $893,231 in the week ending Sept. 19. In the 22305 ZIP code, the average listing price was $605,277. 

On Wednesday, we ran a story about the start time of November’s Alexandria Turkey Trot being moved up to 9 a.m. The story set off a discussion in the comments about notification of road closers and other concerns.

We passed on word Thursday that Alexandria Commons, a 22-unit apartment complex on Bellefonte Avenue, is preparing for a renovation that will raise rents on the units $200 to $300 a month. Borger Management, which oversees the property, also has plans to renovate Caylor Gardens, a nearby 102-unit property located at 4 E. Cliff St.

Also on Thursday, David Speck was appointed to Alexandria City Council to fill the vacancy created by Rob Krupicka’s departure. Krupicka was sworn in as state delegate to the 45th District on Friday.
