Week in Review: GenOn, Debates and a Turn Lane

On Monday this week, GenOn’s Potomac River Generating Station in North Old Town was retired. Elected officials from Alexandria, Richmond and Capitol Hill lauded the closure of the coal-fired power plant.

“Today is a great day,” said Mayor Bill Euille, calling the closure of the plant, which opened in 1949, “a community success” and a good example of how citizens and the city can work together.

Also on Monday, U.S. Senate candidate George Allen (R) made a stop in town for an economic roundtable discussion with Alexandria business owners.

On Tuesday evening, Euille and challenger Andrew Macdonald met in their first debate ahead of November’s election. The two candidates sparred on issues of development, density, affordable housing, transportation and green space.

Green space was also a topic of discussion during the part of Tuesday night’s event featuring the 12 candidates for Alexandria City Council.   

On Wednesday, we ran a story about city officials asking for a study of a potential right-turn lane from Route 1 onto E. Reed Avenue. The issue of the turn lane came forward in council’s discussion of a proposed new affordable housing development on that corner last week.

On Friday, we ran a story about Haute Dogs and Fries opening on Montgomery Street, just a short bike ride from Del Ray.
