Fire Crews Respond to Strange Odor at Mount Vernon Rec Center Gym

Non-serious incident caused by broken or malfunctioning motor, according to Alexandria Fire Department spokesperson.

Fire crews from Alexandria and Arlington County responded to a strange odor coming from the Mount Vernon Recreation Center gymnasium around 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

Though gyms are quite familiar with strange odors, the smell wasn’t caused by a pair of old gym socks.

A broken or malfunctioning motor created the odor, according to an Alexandria Fire Department spokesperson. The incident was not serious and the fire marshal was called off the scene, the spokesperson said.

The incident drew a bevy of fire trucks that briefly blocked part of Commonwealth Avenue during the Thursday evening commute.

Around the same time, Alexandria fire crews responded to a separate fire incident at a home in the 100 block of E. Glendale Avenue. The Alexandria Fire Department spokesman said the incident was also not considered serious.
