DIY Del Ray: Let's Do This! The Del Ray Yarn Bomb Project

We're going to yarn bomb Del Ray and we want YOU to be involved! We're taking a queue from the recent Artisphere Yarn Bomb exhibit in Rosslyn, Virginia, and planning ahead to create a temporary art display for Del Ray. Join us for an exploratory meeting on Thursday night, July 18, at 7 p.m. at the Del Ray Variety Store. The curator of the Rosslyn exhibit, Jennifer Lindsay, will be our guest speaker.

Yarn bombing started out as an underground activity. In the dark of night, guerrilla stitchers added knitted and crocheted "cozies" to public property -- like telephone poles. For more background and photos, see the Wikipedia article.

Perhaps we can go "big" and decorate the trees that line Mt. Vernon Ave?

Or we can limit ourselves to small pieces, say, a yarn-decorated bicycle for VéloCity Co-op. Maybe we can yarn bomb a book (create a book cozy) and insert it in the library bookshelves. Or a few?

Really, the possibilities are limitless. And leading up to the unveiling, we'll have gatherings where interested participants, young and old alike, beginners or experts, get together to knit and crochet the art pieces.

RSVP to leslie[at]diydelray.com if you can attend the meeting. If you can't make it but still want to be involved in the project, email me (Leslie) and we'll add you to our yarn bomb email group.
