DIY Del Ray: Fall Food Swap

Local event connects farmers and food-lovers.

Back in July, Del Ray Patch columnist Dana Damico wrote about the inaugural Del Ray Food Swap, hinting that there would be more to come. We're happy to report that our second food swap, held last Sunday, was equally as delicious and just as lucrative.

On a warm, yet crisp fall evening a group of local farmers and food-lovers gathered at a house on the top of the hill overlooking Del Ray. We traded fresh-baked breads, canned garden vegetables, sweet treats and sauces—all either homegrown or homemade.

The concept of the swap is simple—and if you like to garden or cook, you'll have no problem fitting in. Make as much of your food item as you can, package it up neatly, then trade with others.

For the fall event, swappers left with jars of pesto, bourbon peach jam, artisan bread, chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes baked in mason jars, roasted red pepper spread, canned dilled green beans, hot peppers, rosemary hand scrub and baskets of garden-fresh vegetables.

But more than that, we traded recipes, discovered new and improved canning methods and found inspiration for the upcoming holiday giving season.
