'Wafle Shop' Awning to be Replaced

Restaurant ownership taking advantage of grant program from the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership.

The awning at the Waffle Shop in Arlandria will soon be replaced, meaning the quirky, beloved and possibly iconic misspelling of “wafle” is not long for the tight corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Russell Road.

At Wednesday’s Arlandria Action Plan open house at , members of the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership announced that ownership of the 24-hour restaurant had decided to make the change.

The restaurant's owners are taking advantage of AEDP’s Facade Improvement Grant Program, which provides an opportunity for business and commercial property owners to improve the appearance of building facades and storefronts. It’s an incentive for businesses located inside Alexandria’s Enterprise Zone. The Waffle Shop will receive matching funds to replace the awning.

Will you miss the “Wafle Shop” awning? Do you consider it a landmark? Share your thoughts in the comments.

I actually had a staff member tear-up when I told the bad news. I personally,am very saddened.Tell me it's not so!

I've been going to The Wafle Shop my entire life. It not only represents years and years and years of memories, from weekend breakfast with the family as a child to the, today, late night spot in the wee- hours of the morning with friends. We love the trade mark misspelling that any Alexandria/Arlington resident can distinctly recognize. Lets not forget how we all felt when Generous Georges shut down on Duke street, lets not lose the few Alexandria beauty marks that make us a distinctly amazing city!

Tell them not to correct the spelling.

Say it isn't so!

Wafle Shop is who they are. That misspelling was carried over from a previous location too.

They can't change the spelling... The "one-F" as my wife and I refer to it, is a navigational landmark we use all the time to direct people onto Russell Rd. We've eaten there since we moved to Del Ray in 1999

What? There's no 'eFFin' way that 'The Wafle Shop' awning should come down! It's an Arlandrian landmark known for its charm, of which the awning is so much a part of, as well. I started to frequent 'The Wafle Shop' in the seventies, before the now famous misspelled awning was in place, but once it was up, it was perfect. They sure couldn't ever spell 'wafle' any other way!

NO NO NO NO!!! Can't bear another change to this city!! *sniff*

Unbelievable. Now where in the hell am I supposed to get my wafles?
Leslie Hagan June 22, 2012 at 03:12 AM
They replaced the awning before and kept the spelling. Why can't they simply do that again?
MAK June 22, 2012 at 12:36 PM
The end of an error.

I've lived four blocks south of The Waffle Shop for 20 years and have never eaten there. Do they even serve waffles, er, wafles? What I'd like to see is the vintage neon sign repaired and operational. My wife and I noticed only a couple of days ago that the glass tubing in one of the letters is completely gone. I wish they'd get a city grant for that!

One more thing I forgot to mention: The article says "will be replaced." But does that necessarily mean they won't maintain the misspelling? And replaced with what?

The owners should understand that their restaurant is known as "Wafle" (with a Long "A") Shop and that changing the spelling will literally cause a brand identity crisis. Totally support the new awning, but as the comments and poll above attest - keeping the spelling is the best thing for their business!
Jim Morgan June 22, 2012 at 02:05 PM
Jim Morgan "Wafle"goes back before the green awning. It was kept with that change. Keep it this time. Quirks can be good.

The shop is getting a new awning. On the new awning, "Wafle" will be getting a second "f." That's the restaurant's plan, according to the folks at AEDP.
dandaman606 June 22, 2012 at 08:42 PM
If they're going to replace it, which they definitely should rethink. The new awning should only contain an "F".

Wow. If they changed the spelling, I just don't think it would be the same! It would be just another indistinguishable waffle shop. Please, owners, reconsider. We love, LOVE the Wafle Shop- it sets you apart and makes you special in our hearts. I think changing the spelling would be a mistake.

I still get a kick out of that awning. The neon sign is accurate, why not leave the awning as is?
Drew Hansen (Editor) June 25, 2012 at 07:19 PM
Ownership has decided to keep the awnings. Learn more here: http://delray.patch.com/articles/waffle-shop-to-keep-quirky-awnings
