VeloCity Opens Its Doors in Del Ray

Bicycle cooperative holding its 'soft opening' Saturday at its new Mt. Vernon Avenue location.

VeloCity Bicycle Cooperative is making its “soft opening” at 10 a.m. Saturday at its new digs at 2111 Mt. Vernon Ave.

The nonprofit, which educates community members about bike maintenance, safety and other issues, on S. Union St. when the building was sold.

“Not all things fully set and ready but we are anxious to start to provide services to the community,” VeloCity Director John Patterson wrote in an email on Friday.

On the VeloCity website, Patterson wrote that not all products and services may be available on Saturday, so those entering the shop should probably come armed with some patience.

The nonprofit has offered free pedicab service at First Thursdays in Del Ray and also had a tent several Sundays over the summer at the Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market.

VeloCity volunteers also work with the City of Alexandria to provide community service hours for Alexandria youth and summer employment through the TeensWork program. Recently, VeloCity won an award from the Alexandria Court Services Unit for its work with juveniles on probation.

The property at 2111 Mt. Vernon Ave. previously housed holistic therapy firm . The holistic health business has merged with and is now located at 309 S. Washington St. in Old Town.
