Sushi Sans Kids Arrives in Del Ray

Chef Saran "Peter" Kannasute offers menu of modern sushi rolls and tapas-like tasting dishes.

The Sushi Bar is open for business.

Del Ray’s adult-only sushi and saké spot rolled out the carpet for a soft opening on Saturday night with Chef Saran “Peter” Kannasute at the counter and nary a stroller in sight.

Kannasute’s menu showcases a series of modern sushi rolls and a list of starters and tapas-like tasting dishes that integrate traditional Japanese ingredients with seafood.

And if something on the menu isn’t exactly to a customer’s liking, they’re invited to ask Kannasute to do something special with the ingredients he has on hand that day. The menu includes a “Leave it to the Chef” section. Items can also be made gluten-free on request.

“Just ask me,” Kannasute said. “I want people to be happy. I want them to come back to see me, and I want to see everyone again.”

“He doesn’t want to hide behind the counter,” said Bill Blackburn, one of the co-owners of the 18-and-over restaurant and lounge, which includes a long bar and a series of sofas and banquets. “He was out on the floor on Saturday night more than I expected.”

Sushi rolls range between $6 and $9, while the tasting selections—which include items like salmon carpaccio, sea scallops and tuna tartare—range between $7 and $12.

“The rolls are really about half-priced compared to other similar sushi places,” Blackburn said. “And the price points on the tasting menu invite people to pick up a couple of them to share like tapas.”

At the bar, more than 20 different types of saké are available, including nigori, junmai and nama. The wine menu includes white, rose, red and plum selections. Japanese and domestic beers are also available.

Regular service begins Tuesday at 5 p.m. The restaurant, located at 2312 Mount Vernon Ave., will keep hours of 5 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and Sundays. It will stay open until 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Sushi Bar will not open on Mondays.
