Shakthi South Asian Cuisine Opens on Mount Vernon Avenue

New Arlandria restaurant specializes in Indian, Thai and Sri Lankan cuisine.

Shakthi South Asian Cuisine recently opened its doors at 3807 Mount Vernon Ave. in the space the housed Po Siam for more than 25 years.

In June, Po Siam owner Nirum “Nicky” Vongpukkeaw filed a change of ownership application with the city for a new restaurant. Vongpukkeaw still owns the building but handed the restaurant over to Sheela and Stanley Perera, owners of the Subway in the Mount Vernon Village Shopping Center.

Shakthi offers a menu featuring a fusion of cuisines from India, Thailand and the Pereras’ native Sri Lanka.

“My dad is from Sri Lanka and he has a lot of experience with Indian food,” Natalia Adikarige said of Stanley Perera. “Nicky, the owner of Po Siam, also taught my dad to make some of his favorite Thai dishes.”

Prices on the menu range from $10 to $25 on average.

Shakthi is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week with hours of 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Lunch is available buffet style throughout the week.

The family-friendly restaurant offers vegetarian options and takeout service.

“We do accommodate spiciness to everyone’s liking,” Adikarige said.

More information about the restaurant is available on its Facebook page.
