Report: HomeMade Pizza Co. Chain Closes Its Doors

Company's locations included stores in Del Ray and North Arlington.

The HomeMade Pizza Co. chain has apparently closed its stores as of Friday, according to a news report out of Chicago, where the company was headquartered.

Northern Virginia had at least two HomeMade Pizza Co. storefronts: One in Del Ray, at 2413 Mount Vernon Ave., and one in North Arlington, at 4514 Lee Highway.

"HomeMade Pizza Co. has ceased operations and closed its outlets, the company's CIO confirmed," writes Crain's, a Chicago business publication. There were about 40 stores, half of those in Chicago.

When it opened in Del Ray nearly four years ago, the company welcomed new customers with free pizza.

The company sold unbaked rolled-out pizza dough ready to pop into the oven; customers chose their ingredients. The company also sold salads, cookies and gelato.

The company's unique take on pizza may have been its downfall. Of the storefront located in Del Ray, a customer wrote:

"Interesting idea, and the pizza is pretty good, but for a pizza that you have to go pick up, and then cook in your own kitchen, the prices are a little much."

The company's Web site is not functioning and its Facebook and Twitter accounts have been deleted, Crain's reported.
