Preparations Underway for Upscale Sushi Bar in Del Ray

"Mango" Mike Anderson says new sushi spot will be exclusively for the 18-and-over crowd.

The folks behind Pork Barrel BBQ and Holy Cow will round out their restaurant trilogy in the 2300 block of Mount Vernon Avenue with an R-rated sushi bar.

“Mango” Mike Anderson tells Patch he and his partners are installing furnishings and meeting regularly with a sushi consultant in preparing to open an 18-and-over sushi bar that will be advertised by a single, yet-to-be-determined Japanese character above the door.

It was previously given the working title "Dragon."

“When people call, the staff on the phone will just say ‘sushi bar,’” Anderson said.

Details continue to be sorted out, but Anderson said the bar will include more than 20 different kinds of sake. He installed a “SOON” sign in the windows of the space last week.

The 18-and-over restriction was something Anderson said people in Del Ray had expressed a desire for.

“It’s going to be smaller, more upscale,” Anderson said. “No kids under 18. … Adults have said they need a place, too.”

The space, located between Pork Barrel BBQ and Holy Cow at 2312 Mount Vernon Ave., housed Chef Will Artley’s pop-up restaurant in early 2012 called “Project 2312.”

Pork Barrel BBQ opened in November 2011. Holy Cow followed a year later.
