House and Garden Tour is Biggest Ever

The May 19 tour raised nearly $10,000 for new trees in neighborhood pocket park.

The 2012 Del Ray House and Garden Tour was the biggest in the history of the event.

Organizers said nearly 660 tickets were sold to the May 19 tour, which gave access to 12 unique Del Ray homes and their grounds. 

Tickets sales and advertising revenue in the tour’s program raised roughly $2,000 for the Alexandria Scholarship Fund and nearly $10,000 for new trees to be planted in .

Virginia Amos and Elise Reeder served as co-chairs of the event, which is presented biennially by the Del Ray Citizens Association. A team of volunteer docents kept watch over the homes as visitors walked and biked between stops on the tour.

The increased foot traffic helped increase business along Mt. Vernon Avenue. owner Liz Davis said May 19 offered the second-highest amount of transactions in the history of her frozen custard shop.
