Del Ray's Norge Laundry Closes

Norge Coin-Operated Laundry and Dry Cleaning halted its self-serve laundry operations on Monday as it prepares to close to make way for a new Walgreens in the 1500 block of Mount Vernon Avenue.

Despite requests from Alexandria officials to take its business elsewhere in the city, Walgreens is getting ready to transform the entire retail strip at 1509-1517 Mount Vernon Ave into a new store.

An employee at the laundromat said Norge’s owner was seeking a new location but had yet to find anything.

Christina Mindrup, vice president commercial real estate with the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, told Patch in may that finding a new location for the laundromat in the city would prove difficult. 

AEDP reached out to businesses in the retail strip about finding new locations in Alexandria.

Sunday was the final day to drop off wash-and-fold and dry-cleaning orders. All orders must be picked up by Thursday, July 25.

The wash-and-fold service was a popular offering at the business.

"From the whole team, we would like to extend a most heartfelt thank you for your continued support and patronage throughout the years," reads a note on the front entrance to Norge.

Potomac West Interiors and Antiques and Not Too Shabby Consignments, also located in the retail strip, held a farewell party over the weekend kicking off their closure sales that run until they move into new digs south of the city.
