Alexandria Food Truck Proposal Tabled Until Fall

Stakeholders uniformly express a desire for more time and community discussion on proposal.

City Manager Rashad Young has pushed consideration of a proposal to bring those once and perhaps still trendy food trucks to Alexandria's streets to the fall citing a need for more time for consideration and discussion among stakeholders.

Alexandria City Council was scheduled to consider a legislative proposal on June 11 that would bring food trucks to three areas in the city—Old Town, Del Ray and Carlyle.

According to a June 4 memo from Young to members of council, the proposal drew scrutiny and concerns from community groups, restaurateurs and food truck vendors.

“A common theme raised in all the meetings is the need for wider community discussion, and more time to consider the proposal, make suggestions for improvements, and/or offer alternative proposals,” the memo reads.

According to the memo, a work group will be created to review the current proposal and offer suggestions and alternatives and provide recommendations in the fall. The group will include citizens, restaurateurs, food truck vendors, farmers market masters and staff.

A smaller, pilot-type proposal could be considered by council to test the food trucks in certain times and areas in the city over the summer.

Food trucks were used during First Night Alexandria in December 2012.
