The S. Glebe Road Harris Teeter remains on track to reopen this fall, a company spokeswoman told Patch on Tuesday following news of the popular supermarket chain's acquisition by the Kroger Co.

"Harris Teeter will become a division of Kroger. We will maintain the Harris Teeter banner, our management teams, our new store growth plan, our distribution and manufacturing facilities in North Carolina as well as our headquarters in Matthews, N.C.," spokeswoman Danna Jones told Patch in an email.

"We will continue to provide our shoppers the outstanding product and customer service they have come to expect from their Harris Teeter."
Jones could not provide a specific reopening day for the store at 3600 S. Glebe Road in Arlington but did say that fall 2013 remains the expected date.

It has been closed since May 2012 following an interior flood caused by a sewage backup.

Harris Teeter wanted assurances from Arlington that the county would work to prevent such problems in the future.

Sarah Maiellano, a resident of the Eclipse condominiums, in March delivered 415 signed letters to the Arlington County Board asking the local government to "take any and all actions necessary to hasten the reopening" of the popular grocery store."

Elected officials and county executives that day pledged to do everything in their power to hasten the store's reopening, including expediting any permitting issues.

Harris Teeter announced the fall 2013 reopening two days later.

"I can't wait," Maiellano told Patch in an email in May. "Driving to grocery shop is really cramping my style!"

In Alexandria, a new Harris Teeter is scheduled to open in North Old Town in early 2014. It is currently being constructed as part of a mixed-use development in the 700 blocks of N. Saint Asaph and Pitt streets. There is also a Harris Teeter store in Foxchase Shopping Center on Duke Street.

Arlington is home to four other Harris Teeter stores, with locations in Ballston, Shirlington Village, the Lee Harrison Shopping Center and Pentagon City.
