Weekend Planner: Free Music, Washington's Birthday and More

Although the George Washington Birthday Parade in Old Town Alexandria has passed, many local groups are celebrating Washington’s birthday throughout this month.

In addition, there’s free music and more in Alexandria and beyond. Here’s your weekend planner:

Walking with Washington

• When/Where: 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. It leaves from the Ramsay House Visitors Center, 221 King St.
• Why go: There are dozens and dozens of places in Old Town associated with George Washington—here’s your chance to learn about some of them and impress your out-of-town visitors with your local history knowledge.
• Price: Free.

George Washington and Religion: Private Man and Public Issues

• When/Where: 1 – 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at the George Washington Masonic Memorial, 101 Callahan Drive.
• Why go: A free, educational symposium on Washington’s life and the role of religion in it. Sponsored by the Freemasons as part of Washington’s birthday celebration.
• Price: Free.

Acoustic Blues Night

• When/where: 7 – 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at La Fromagerie Cheese and Wine Bistro, 1222 King St.
• Why go: This acoustic blues night features pre-war Delta Blues to go with your wine and cheese.

Winter Caberet featuring The Alexandria Singers

• When/where: 7:30 p.m. Saturdya, Feb. 23 at Alexandria Singers, 2932 King St.
• Why go: A fun evening of song, dance, variety and comedy performances.

African-American Film Festival: The Color Purple

• When/where: 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 at Beatley Central Library.
• Why go: The library is showcasing films that highlight African-American history and culture in honor of Black History Month.
