Week in Review: Ballots, Emma's and Neige

A look back at the week that was.

On Monday, we ran a story about Old Town IT, a firm based in Del Ray, that was recently named one of the 500 fastest-growing private companies in the country by Inc. magazine. Old Town IT was the only Alexandria-based business to make the list.

We published a story on Tuesday about how candidates and political parties in Alexandria are gearing up for an unprecedented Nov. 6 ballot. Party affiliations will not be listed for local races, placing even more importance on sample ballots.

Also on Tuesday, we learned a Bobcat tractor was stolen from Potomac Yard. The Alexandria Police Department has no suspects in the case.

On Wednesday, we ran a story about plans for a new coffee and wine bar on Hume Avenue called Emma’s. Owner Connie Desrosiers is optimistic she can open the coffee end of the business by early 2013.

On the Del Ray Patch Facebook page, we passed on word Thursday that Neige, a beloved Great Pyrenees that lived next to the firehouse in the 200 block of E. Windsor Avenue, had passed away. More than 30 readers left remembrances and condolences on the photo we published of Neige.

Finally this week, we had a story about Alexandria City Council calling for more traffic enforcement on Howell and Custis avenues east of Mt. Vernon Avenue after neighbors hit City Hall with a wave of complaints and concerns. Council and city staff said they were pursuing more permanent traffic-calming measures as well.
