Volunteer Cleanups Planned for Two Alexandria Parks

Hume Springs resident Jacob Cuomo is teaming with Clean Virginia Waterways to organize cleanups for Four Mile Run Park and Monticello Park.

Clean Virginia Waterways is holding cleanups on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Four Mile Run Park in Arlandria and Monticello Park in North Ridge.

The cleanups will run from 8 a.m. to noon and volunteers are needed to make the event a success.

In 2012, Hume Springs resident Jake Cuomo organized a cleanup with Clean Virginia Waterways after noticing an inordinate amount of trash and other items in the parks near his house.

During the 2012 cleanup, volunteers helped haul more than 1 ton of trash out of Four Mile Run Park.

Those interested in lending a hand can meet at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at the newly renamed Conservatory Center at Four Mile Run Park located at 4109 Mount Vernon Ave. or at either park anytime during the cleanup.

Cuomo asks that volunteers RSVP so an adequate amount of supplies can be ensured. To RSVP, send Cuomo an email at jfcuomo@comcast.net.

Gloves and trash bags will be provided and volunteers are asked to arrive dressed to get dirty. Rubber boots are recommended but not required.

Following the cleanups, volunteers will be treated to a cookout at MOM’s Organic Market, located at 3831 Mount Vernon Ave.

In 2011, Clean Virginia Waterways removed more than 295,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from the state’s beaches, lakes and waterways through similar cleanups.
