UPDATE: Tornado Watch Canceled

Severe storms expected later Monday

2:30 p.m. update — The National Weather Service canceled its tornado watch for Alexandria about an hour ago.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the entire Washington region, including the city of Alexandria, until 4 p.m. Monday.

According to weather.com, thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon with conditions favorable to tornado development. More than an inch of rain could potentially fall. The storms are expected to carry high winds with potentially damaging effects.

The storms are expected to continue into the evening as a cold front moves into the area.

The city’s website has a page devoted to tornado preparedness tips. Be sure to have flashlights and batteries on hand as the storms could affect Del Ray’s problematic power grid.

Del Ray was hit by a microburst during the August 2010 storm, which knocked out power in the neighborhood for several days.
