Monroe Avenue Home Wins Halloween Competition

Del Ray Business Association hands out three honorable mentions and selects one home for entry into the competition's hall of fame.

The elaborate Halloween decorations at 210 E. Monroe Avenue are the best in the neighborhood based on judging for the Del Ray Business Association’s best-decorated house contest sponsored by Realtor Jen Walker.

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille and Del. Rob Krupicka (D-45th) and his family served as judges for the contest.

Honorable mentions included: 24 W. Del Ray Ave. for “Best Use of a Mummy,” 2930 Hickory St. for “Most Creepy” and 102 W. Alexandria Ave. for “Best Use of Pirates.”

Only houses nominated in the contest by the Oct. 21 deadline were entered into the competition.

Last year’s winner, the expansive pirate house located at 1407 Russell Rd., was selected for entry into the competition’s hall of fame “in honor of their continual excellence in decorating extravaganza and for bringing great viewing pleasure to the community,” according to DRBA officer Gayle Reuter.

The Russell Road house is just the second in 16 years of the competition to be selected for the hall of fame, following 311 E. Clifford Ave.

Winners are invited to the Nov. 19 DRBA luncheon where they will receive gift baskets with prizes supplied by area businesses.

The awards are traditionally handed out following the Del Ray Halloween Parade, but this year’s event was canceled because of Hurricane Sandy.

Next year's Halloween parade is scheduled for Oct. 27, 2013.
