Holiday Volunteering: The Reading Connection

Help children learn the love of reading with the Reading Connection.

The holiday season is here and that means Alexandria communities seek volunteers for many and different causes.

The Alexandria Patches are highlighting good causes seeking volunteers during this holiday season.

This week's volunteer spotlight shines on:

Who: The Reading Connection

What: Read Aloud to Children

When: Wednesdays, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Where: Read-Aloud programs are held in emergency and transitional housing shelters, domestic violence safehouses, and affordable housing community centers throughout Alexandria.

Why: Teams of volunteers spend an hour reading with kids and engaging them in conversation and related activities in the City of Alexandria. The goal of Read Aloud is to encourage children to spend more time reading and talking about books. Volunteers must be at least 18. Ages 55 and over welcome.

The Reading Connection is also seeking volunteers to help out at book stores during this holiday season to wrap gifts and raise money for its programs.
