Great Escape: Wine Class

At the end of a long day, check out a local wine tasting

Did you ever have one of those days where the only thing that gets you through it is the promise of a nice glass of wine at the end?  If you’re like me, some weeks hold more than one of those days.

Ah yes, there is nothing better than a nice glass of wine and some quality time with your spouse while your perfect child sits quietly on the couch learning Mandarin.

Right, that is my fantasy. Normally, I am gulping down my wine while trying to wrangle my son into a bath or attempting conversation with my husband while a certain toddler climbs all over me.

It seems the only way to enjoy my wine is after we put our son to bed, and usually by then I’m fighting to stay awake—and wine certainly does not help that.

One solution to the wine dilemma is to make a night of it. Of course, it would be easy to go to a bar and have a glass or two, but why not make it a little more interesting by attending a wine class or wine tasting?

Luckily, there are plenty to choose in this area. Almost every wine shop hosts wine tastings, and quite a few restaurants have joined in on the fun, too.

In Del Ray:

has a that explores the history, science and taste of wine.

hosts a and occasional wine and cheese classes.

In Old Town:

will host an on April 13.

will host two wine tastings this month featuring wines of France and Spain.

and also host tasting events on a regular basis.

I am not really a “professional” wine taster. I find some classes and tastings to be over my head with all the sniffing and swishing and sipping, so I have to remind myself that it is what you make of it.

Think about going with a group. Groups always make things more fun, and you won’t feel out of your element if the tasting gets a little too stuffy.

So instead of dreaming about coming home for a glass of wine at the end of a stressful day, let someone else be the kids’ jungle gym for a night and head out for some knowledge with your wine.
