Great Escape: Del Ray Music Week

Head to Del Ray this week for some live music

I have a confession to make: I’ve devoted at least two Great Escape articles to local music after making a goal to get back into the live music scene. But how much live music have I actually enjoyed since making that goal? None.

I take full responsibility for that. I don’t have a lot of free time. My husband doesn’t have much free time, either. So finding a time that we are both free (and not exhausted), and one that corresponds to a local live performance has proven difficult.

But I think I have found the answer. Actually, while going over the Patch events calendar this week, the answer pretty much hit me in the face.

This weekend, Del Ray is celebrating live music with the annual Del Ray Music Festival. This year, the organizers expanded the event to incorporate local businesses during Del Ray Music Week. If you are in the vicinity of Del Ray this week, it will almost be impossible to not stumble upon some music.

Just meander down Mt. Vernon Avenue any time after 7 p.m., and you will find live music being performed at the following venues: , , Del Ray Farmers Market, , ,  and . Rumor has it the School of Rock will also have some performances going on throughout the week.

Del Ray Music Week culminates on Saturday with the fifth annual Del Ray Music Festival, held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the fields at .

To find a complete listing of artists and times, see the Patch Events Calendar or visit the event website, www.delraymusicfestival.com.

Another way to enjoy the music is while giving back to the community. Volunteers are needed to help out at the music festival on Saturday. Help is needed to set up from 8 to 10 a.m. and cleanup from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. and in two- to three-hour shifts throughout the day.  To find out more information, go to http://www.delraymusicfestival.com/volunteer/

There is no way I will be able to get through the week without accomplishing my goal of attending a live music performance. There's even a good chance I'll do it by accident.

At the moment, I can’t think of anything better than grabbing dinner at one of the restaurants on Mt. Vernon Avenue, stopping for some dessert elsewhere, and catching at least two different bands. This week more than ever, Del Ray is a great destination on a summer evening.
