Great Escape: Chirilagua Festival

Join the crowd on Sunday at Four Mile Run Park

It’s the middle of summer and it’s hot and buggy outside even at 9 p.m. So where will you find me on the average weeknight? After putting our son to bed, my husband and I will be on the couch watching TV.

We are not proud of being TV junkies. But our days are busy and by the evening we usually just collapse on the couch.

During the summer, we often find ourselves gravitating toward HGTV—more specifically one of my favorite shows, "House Hunters International."

The reason I am drawn to this specific show is because it takes the me all over the world and lets me dream about owning a vacation home in an exotic place.

My favorite episodes usually involve South or Central America. I can’t put my finger on the exact reason, but it could have to do with the fact that I have never visited these parts of the world and have not experienced the culture. I really am anxious to plan a trip to check out what I have been missing.

Unfortunately, a trip to Central or South America does not look promising in the near future. I am expecting my second child in a little more than a month and a newborn will make traveling difficult for a while.

But that doesn’t mean I have to wait to experience the Latin American culture. This weekend there’s a festival that celebrates South and Central America, and even better, it is practically in my backyard. This Sunday is the annual in Arlandria.

Held at from noon to 7 p.m., the Chirilagua Festival features live entertainment and traditional arts and crafts from the region. And because I’m eating for two, I will particularly enjoy the food.

If you are like me and are dreaming of a foreign destination, stop by the Chirilagua Festival and get a taste of Latin America, even if it’s only a temporary fix.

If you’re just looking for something to do, it’s likely to be a festive atmosphere, providing something different on a summer Sunday.
