Evening Star, Taqueria Claim Top Prizes at Taste of Del Ray

Fifth-annual restaurant showcase is presented by the Del Ray Business Association.

Evening Star Cafe and Taqueria Poblano took the top prizes Sunday at the fifth annual Taste of Del Ray competition, presented by the Del Ray Business Association.

Evening Star Cafe claimed top prize in the judge’s choice competition with Chef Jim Jeffords’ tomato sorbet with basil vinaigrette and candied ginger.

Washington-area food writer Jordan Wright, a resident of Old Town, served as the competition’s celebrity judge.

“It was really a complex and balanced dish,” Wright said of the tomato sorbet. “I just thought it was a nice summer dish, perfect for a warm day like today.”

Wright selected The Happy Tart as runner-up for its chocolate cream puff with caramel and strawberry fraiser.

Taquaeria Poblano claimed the people’s choice award for its fish tacos. The dish also claimed third-place in the judge’s choice competition.

Festival attendees selected Evening Star's sorbet as runner-up and Cheesetique’s Mac ‘n Cheesetique dish as the third-place finisher in the people’s choice competition.  

“The thing I really appreciate is the restaurant community here in Del Ray,” said Jeff Wallingford of Taqueria. “It really makes this place a destination.”
