Del Ray Citizens Association Seeks National Night Out Volunteers

Annual neighborhood event facing possible cancelation.

The Del Ray Citizens Association is seeking volunteers to organize a National Night Out event in the community this August.

The DRCA is providing a $500 budget for the event, which will mostly cover refreshments like hot dogs and water. DRCA President Bill Hendrickson wrote that the time commitment is “fairly limited” in an email to membership. Past organizers are available to provide step-by-step help.

“If no one steps forward soon, we will need to cancel the Del Ray event, which has been held for many years,” Hendrickson wrote.

Founded in 1984, National Night Out is an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide, according to the National Night Out website.
