Construction to Begin Soon on New Dominion Substation on Monroe Avenue

Power company meeting Thursday with Del Ray Citizens Association committee to discuss project.

Construction is expected to begin in late July on a new Dominion Virginia Power substation on E. Monroe Avenue next to Swing’s Coffee that will serve both Del Ray and Potomac Yard.

The new substation will also provide additional capacity for future growth in the area and potentially create shorter power outage times during storms and other weather incidents, according Janell Hancock, Dominion’s Project Communications Coordinator.

Hancock and others from Dominion will be on hand for a meeting with the Del Ray Citizens Association Land-Use Committee at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11 at Mount Vernon Recreation Center to discuss the project, scheduling and construction-related issues. The public is invited to attend.

Designed by local architect Lisa Lettieri, the new substation includes a screening wall built to look like the Art Deco warehouses on Leslie Avenue.

“The windows and glass will give it a realistic style,” Hancock said.

The substation is one of thee elements on the southside of E. Monroe Avenue either planned or under construction.

Work continues on the Bell Del Ray apartment complex underneath the Monroe Avenue Bridge, while a 1-acre dog park is planned between the apartments and the substation.
