Art Deco Society of Washington Presenting Del Ray Tour

Self-guided walking tour will be made available Saturday, June 8.

The Art Deco Society of Washington is hosting a self-guided walking tour of Del Ray’s notable buildings and a look inside one neighborhood bungalow on Saturday, June 8.

Tour participants will receive an illustrated digital guide by registering. The walking tour is planned for roughly 90 minutes.

According to the ADSW newsletter:

“…the tour largely follows Mount Vernon Avenue from the Braddock Road Metro Station on the blue and yellow lines to such locations as the George Washington Middle School, it also takes participants down Leslie and Monroe avenues past several warehouses. Along the way, there are places to shop, such as Acme Mid-Century + Modern in the Potomac West Interiors & Antique Mall and Amalgamated Classic Clothing and Dry Goods, both of which are offering special discounts to tour participants.”

Earlier this year, Alexandria’s Department of Planning and Zoning proposed the development of a Del Ray Historic Preservation Plan as part of its work for fiscal year 2014. The plan is aimed at preserving the mid-20th century commercial Art Deco buildings on Leslie Avenue by creating a new National Register Historic District and potentially expanding the existing boundaries of the existing Town of Potomac Historic District to include Art Deco buildings on Mount Vernon Avenue.
