La Feria Bakery Owner Profiled

Alicia Cabrera tells her story in The Washington Post.

Alicia Cabrera, owner of La Feria Bakery in Arlandria, was profiled in Tuesday on The Washington Post website in an article titled “At home in Chirilagua.”

The article is part of a collaborative series between The Washington Post and American University to showcase student work through AU's Race, Ethnic and Community Reporting class and through the Community Voice Project.

Cabrera, who moved to Annandale with her immediate family eight years ago from Bolivia and opened her bakery, calls Arlandria “excellent” and said she feels at ease talking with community members in her native Spanish.

Through a translator, Cabrera said her customers reflect the makeup of the Arlandria-Chirilagua neighborhood: Bolivians, Salvadorians, Guatemalans and a few Peruvians.

Cabrera, 46, also said in her experience the neighborhood’s reputation for crime is unwarranted.
