Animal Control Report: Rooster Captured

Plus, a raccoon trapped at a dry-cleaning facility.

Animal Control officers in Alexandria deal with a variety of calls every week. Here's a glance at some recent incidents in the city courtesy of Patrick Egan of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Rooster on the loose — An animal control officer was dispatched to the 5500 block of N. Morgan Street on Nov. 21 after a rooster was discovered walking the grounds between apartment buildings in the area.

City code makes it unlawful for any person to keep any fowl within 200 feet of any structure or dwelling not occupied by the same person. This law effectively bans fowl from being kept in the vast majority of Alexandria.

The rooster was captured and taken to the Vola Lawson Animal shelter where it was treated for dehydration, malnourishment and an infection called bumblefoot. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is currently seeking a rescue farm or sanctuary for the rooster.

Raccoon scrub — On Nov. 22, an animal control officer was dispatched to the 1600 block of N. Quaker Lane after management of a dry-cleaning facility reported finding a raccoon in the building.

The responding officer was not able to locate the raccoon, so a baited humane trap was set.

The ring-tailed bandit was discovered in the trap the next day and released into the woods near Chinquapin Park.
