Animal Control Report: Injured Duck and a Fox in Del Ray

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and Animal Control Officers responded to the following calls:

Injured duck — On Jan. 9, animal control officers responded to a report of an injured duck in the 1100 block of Quaker Hill Lane. From a distance, it appeared the to had an unknown injury to its foot.

However, the officers were unable to capture the duck because it had moved into the water. The duck was able to swim and fly on its own.

Safekeeping — On Jan. 9, animal control officers assisted a citizen in the safekeeping of her animals after the basement flooded in her home in the 500 block of N. Columbus Street. Later in the week, officers assisted with the safekeeping of a cat in the 300 block of S. Reynolds Street in Alexandria after is owner was taken to the hospital.

Bat check — On Jan. 11, animal control officers went to the 3900 block of Taney Avenue to respond to a report of a cat that had possibly been exposed to a bat. Bats can carry rabies and the animal was quarantined in the home. Officers were unable to locate the bat and a report was taken.

Foxy Del Ray — On Jan. 13, animal control officers spoke with a resident in the unit block of E. Custis Avenue who reported a fox living under the porch of their home.

As with all native animals, Alexandria Animal Control will not capture or relocate healthy specimens that are not posing immediate threats of harm or in immediate danger.

The caller was provided with information on wildlife removal services.

Poor pooch — On Jan. 13, animal control officers responded to a report of a dog that was struck by a car in the 1300 block of N. Van Dorn Street. The dog was found deceased on arrival. It was collected and properly removed from the scene.
