Alexandria Gearing Up for DiverseCity Multicultural Fest

Saturday festival at Four Mile Run Park Building in Arlandria will celebrate city's diversity.

Alexandria is hosting the second annual DiverseCity Alexandria Multicultural Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Four Mile Run Park Community Building (4109 Mount Vernon Ave.).

Designed to bring community members together and celebrate Alexandria’s diversity, the festival will include free family entertainment, including live music and games and other activities representing the region’s cultures.

“Nearly a third of Alexandrians speak a language other than English at home,” said Debbie Hodnett, festival chair. “The city of Alexandria is proud to celebrate these diverse cultures by highlighting the variety of music, dance, crafts and cuisines that make Alexandria so vibrant.”

The Kate Moran Band will perform pop and rock tunes, including songs inspired by bandleader Moran’s experiences growing up in Alexandria. Higher Hands, a funk group with a deep love for hip hop, R&B and jazz, and Salvadoran-Honduran band Melodica Oriental are also scheduled to perform.

“This year we’re amplifying it by presenting even more multicultural performances, activities, handmade crafts and cuisines,” Hodnett said.

International crafts from local non-profit groups and cuisines from nearby restaurants will be available for purchase throughout the afternoon.
