Alexandria Animal Control Report: Squirrel Goes Shopping

Plus, deer rescue and a new chief officer.

Animal Control officers in Alexandria deal with a variety of calls every week. Here's a glance at some recent incidents in the city courtesy of Patrick Egan of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Sneaky Squirrel — Early holiday shopping appears to appeal to small mammals, too.

On Nov. 6, an Animal Control officer was dispatched to the 600 block of King Street after a squirrel gained entry into a store that had its front door open.

The officer succeeded in capturing the squirrel and returned it to the wild.

The shopkeepers were advised to keep their door closed in order to prevent other nut-enthusiasts from flying in for holiday deals.

Deer Rescue — On Nov. 5, an Animal Control officer was dispatched to the 3700 block of W. Braddock Road after receiving a report of an injured deer.

Once upon the scene, the officer quickly concluded the deer had sustained minor injuries while likely leaping into someone’s yard. It was unable to exit the confined space on its own.

The officer was able to open the gate and lure the deer out of the yard, where it swiftly returned to the wilds of Alexandria.

Seskey Hired — Alexandria City Council formally appointed Joe Seskey the new chief officer of Animal Control on Tuesday.

Seskey, a recently retired Alexandria police sergeant, was selected after a national search of candidates and an interview process conducted by city staff and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

“I’m just very pleased and honored to be considered for this appointment and excited to serve the city in another capacity,” Seskey said.
