Alexandria’s Friends of Guest House Honored by Giant Foods July 18-24 as part of “11 Weeks of Empowerment” Leading up to Oprah Winfrey's "The Life You Want" Tour DC-Area Show/Visit

Friends of Guest House, an Alexandria-based charity that helps Northern Virginia women make successful transitions from incarceration into the community, is one of 11 mid-Atlantic area nonprofits to be promoted in conjunction with Oprah Winfrey's upcoming eight-city inspirational tour, Oprah's The Life You Want Weekend.

Guest House’s  “Week of Empowerment” is this week, July 18-24.  It was selected by the tour's local sponsor, Giant Food, for its embodiment of "Oprah’s message of courage and empowerment."

Giant Food is promoting Guest House and 10 other mid-Atlantic area nonprofits in the 11 weeks leading up to Oprah’s DC show. The tour will come to DC's Verizon Center, September 19-20.  Giant Food will donate $1,000 to each featured organization.

"We are honored to be associated with this tour," says Kari Galloway, executive director of Friends of Guest House (http://www.friendsofguesthouse.org) "Oprah Winfrey is one of our greatest 'heroes' here at Guest House." Oprah is a powerful role model to our clients: woman just released from incarceration, confronted by overwhelming challenges and determined to do their best to reclaim their lives and help make a better world for others, Kari also noted.

According to a Giant spokesman, “During our ‘11 Weeks of Empowerment,’ one organization will be featured each week in Giant’s ad circular, in-store signage, and digital media campaign in conjunction with a consumer sweepstakes. In stores and online, Giant and Procter & Gamble will display messages from each nonprofit and encourage customers to visit their websites and get involved."

Oprah said as part of the tour's announcement, "I want us all to fulfill our greatest potential. To find our calling and summon the courage to live it,"  Each two-day event will feature evenings with Oprah and other inspirational "life trailblazers," whom she has personally handpicked.
