Desk Drive for Children at Brent Place Apartments

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) says that finding a specific location in the home where children can study helps make homework time more successful and more consistent. Many children living in Brent Place Apartments (located in Alexandria's West End) do not have a place to study in their apartments. Adding a small desk to the apartment where a child can study helps young students develop consistent study habits and stresses the importance of school.

To further reinforce good study habits, children who receive a desk through this community action will make a homework pledge to do their homework, read weekly, and keep their desk space clean.

As of 2009, all of the residents at Brent Place had incomes below 60% of the area median income and 54% of residents received rental assistance through Housing Choice Vouchers. Many of the families living in Brent Place Apartments may not be able to afford desks or study spaces for their children.

Through partnering with Bienvenidos, The City of Alexandria, Community Lodgings, Samuel Tucker Elementary School, and Wright to Read, ACTion Alexandria hopes to collect 35 desks (new or gently worn) for children at Brent Place. You may also donate money towards the purchase of a new desk by using the donate button at the bottom of the page. Desks can come in all shapes and sizes, but we prefer desks that can accommodate children and apartment living, including lap desks and small tables and chairs.
