The Highballers (part of Del Ray Music Week)
The Highballers have been spinning heads for years with their buttery sweet harmonies that meld perfectly with the hard twang of Fender telecasters. The Washington, DC alt country band taps into musicians like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and The Knitters. Singers Tara Callahan and Kendall Jackson are reminiscent of classic duos Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, and Exene Cervenka and John Doe.
The band does not fit into the tame, harmless pop mold fabricated by the corporate pop music industry that most people associate with country music. The Highballers have a long list not only of country and Americana influences but rock , punk and indie too. Recently, the band finished their first EP and will release a full album of originals in June 2012.
More About St. Elmos Coffee Pub
Chances are that if it happens in Del Ray, it passes through St. Elmo's Coffee Pub.
Opened in 1996, this coffee bar and eatery supplies the neighborhood with plenty of baked goods (low-fat muffins being the specialty) and a large dose of caffeine. Sandwiches and lunchtime fare are also available along with a variety of sodas, smoothies and other bottled drinks.
With walls decorated by local artists and a bevy of seating (including a section for children), the warm atmosphere has made St. Elmo's a community meeting place and a common venue for frequent live-music performances.
