'The Wiz' Wows Crowds at High School

T.C. Williams High School conducted the performance.

By Brenna Carroll, Bishop Ireton High School student All that could be heard coming from T.C. Williams High School’s auditorium on a recent Friday night was laughter and applause as members of "The Wiz" cast delighted audience members with musical numbers from the upbeat redo of a classic tale based on L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Decorated with a script full of wit and a libretto filled with endlessly catchy melodies, by Charlie Small and William F. Brown, "The Wiz" was sure to be a night of fun on all sides of the stage lights. The story follows Dorothy on her journey from Kansas to Oz as she encounters creatures unimaginable in the real world. Dorothy, played by senior Samantha Rose Williams, showed off her range of …

Weird Virginia: Naked Driver, Forgotten Weed, High-Tech Art and High-End Funny Money

Plus, Iguana models, cell towers in disguise, a Ladybug exodus and two birds ask, "Who cooks for you?"

Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening somewhere in the area. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Drivers at the Lake Ridge commuter lot near Interstate 95 saw more than the road crews and heavy machinery that have become standard commute scenery. Prince William County Police arrested a man April 19 when they found him dancing naked on the hood of his car.  Without question, you should surrender to authorities when police have identified you as the suspect in a grand-larceny case. But we feel compelled to caution suspects about checking their pockets after a 27-year-old Annandale man turned himself in. Police in Falls Church say they …

Movie Review: 'Oblivion' Stunning Yet Flawed Sci-Fi

PG-13 film starring Tom Cruise opens Friday in theaters.

In director Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion, you can see a love for and desire to expand on the great classics of science fiction on film. With the most impressive use of IMAX for a feature film to date, in that respect he has created something new and exciting, with what is essentially a 3-D movie where you don't need the glasses. • Oblivion is showing this week Regal Potomac Yard 16 and AMC Hoffman Center 22. Click on the theater links for showtimes.     Production esigner Darren Gilford (of TRON: Legacy) and cinematographer Claudio Miranda (Oscar winner for Life of Pi) make, to quote the movie, "an effective team." The visual landscapes of the film and the meticulousness taken in the action sequences are extraordinary. Here, the integration …

Movie Review: 'Trance' a Hypnotic Head Trip Worth Taking

Rated R for language, violence, nudity.

Director Danny Boyle, fresh off being dubbed a national hero for his triumph directing the Olympic ceremonies in London, took another big directorial risk with his new release Trance.  • Trace is showing this weekend at AMC Hoffman Center 22 and AMC Loews Shirlington. Click on the theater links for Trance showtimes. It is a frenetic, haunting genre-bender that grabs hold of and keeps your attention from its first moments to its last with such force you'll feel like you're falling through Alice's rabbit hole after being hurled into it by two burly six-foot bunnies in kilts.  This cinematic journey is one filled with confusion, illusions, violence and moral ambiguities, and not a head trip everyone will be willing to surrender to or …

Submitted items will continue to be collected on the city’s website after the deadline. Young offers this poem as an example: Stewart Ave.  January 12, 2011 The sun went bowling here today.  It rolled from the snow-covered lot at one end of the street  past picket fences, barking dogs and bird feeders,  past bungalows and …

Alexandria on Precipice of Change, Says Tourism Official

Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association President and CEO Patricia Washington sees a city poised to progress.

People visit Alexandria for its history, art, charm and ambiance, among other things. So when it comes to tourism, the city pretty much sells itself, right? Not exactly, says Patricia Washington, president and CEO of the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association. “Tourism marketing works,” said Washington, who stepped into her job in late 2012. That’s something she learned from her tenure at the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, she said, speaking with Patch at ACVA’s offices on N. Washington Street. “Tourism marketing is a big driver of economic impact for a city. It makes a difference in a city’s economy,” she said. “It generates revenues benefitting everyone in the city.” In fiscal year 2012, visitors to …

Alexandria does benefit from tourism, although people need to realize that some stay here and in Crystal City to see D.C. monuments, memorials, museums, Cherry Blossoms, sports events (March Madness) as well. The King St. corridor and waterfront will likely remain the main attractions and the free trolley provided to and from Metro is well justified. It is also good to have regular police patrols…   more ›

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes Students Dive Into Arts

The Lower School held its 10th annual “ARTStravaganza” Thursday.

Martin Urbach picks up an empty yogurt container and demonstrates how you can wrap a rubber band around it to create a rubber band guitar. “Depending on how tight or how loose that is, you get a different sound,” Urbach tells a class of first-graders. He lays down the ground rules for the students to make their own “instruments”: Sharing is caring, and no touching anyone else’s work. “But you can ask!” he adds. Urbach was one of more than 20 professional artists who visited the St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School’s Lower Campus Thursday for “ARTStravaganza,” an entire day devoted to the arts. The artists led grades junior kindergarten through 5 in workshops with hands-on demonstrations and activities in everything from modern dance to …
