Film is rated PG-13.
Boy, this is going to be one short review. This movie has more spoilers than the 1967 Enterprise had Tribbles…and in the interest of full disclosure, this is written by the Cinema Siren who owns chairs from the Voyager show, can list the original episodes in order of appearance, has a T-shirt with a quote in Klingon, and a model of the Enterprise signed by all the original cast members. • Star Trek Into Darkness is showing this week at Regal Potomac Yard 16 and AMC Hoffman Center 22. Click on the theater links for showtimes. That is to say, fandom lives here. Any experience of watching the new release by director J. J. Abrams would naturally be filtered through a brain steeped in Star Trek knowledge and lore. That being said, there is…

Jong Lee ends his set at the Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market with a Skynyrd cover that flies off the rails.
The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market, located at 4109 Mount Vernon Ave., frequently hosts live music in the late morning and early afternoon on Sundays as the market wraps up. This past Sunday, May 12, Alexandria singer and guitar player Jong Lee ended his set with a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.” While it was by no means a rare cover, Lee incorporated a kazoo and some unique percussion accompaniment from his son into the song's coda. Oh, and the police got involved, too (no, not Sting). Just watch the video. The not-for-profit Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market is open Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October. It was the first market in Alexandria or Arlington County to employ the Supplemental Nutrition …

This fearless interpretation by director Luhrmann is well worth seeing.
No question whatsoever, director Baz Luhrmann is someone who elicits strong opinions with his every movie. Moulin Rouge draws forth a swoony sigh from its biggest fans and an eye roll from its detractors. In an industry that often plays it safe, creating movies like Fast and Furious 6 to keep the easy money flowing, it is always refreshing that someone is taking chances, and certainly Luhrmann has built his career subscribing to the "go big or go home" school of filmmaking. • The Great Gatsby is showing this week at Regal Potomac Yard 16 and AMC Hoffman Center 22. Click on the theater links for showtimes. His new film The Great Gatsby is no exception. Not only does he create the sort of visually over-saturated and extravagant fantasy …

T.C. Williams alum Chip Esten helps raise funds for the Alexandria Scholarship Fund.
Star of ABC show “Nashville” Chip Esten recently returned to Alexandria to play a fundraiser for his alma mater. Esten performed Friday night at Durant Center at a $150-per-ticket benefit for the Alexandria Scholarship Fund, reports Megan Cloherty for WTOP. Esten played for about 200 school supporters and others at the May 3 event at the Durant Center. “Most of the people here have had to listen to me play music over the years, so now it’s funny they were nice enough to cough-up for the charity and listen to it again,” he told WTOP. He recalls his time at T.C. Williams for WTOP: "My teachers always loved me the year after I was in their class. I'd be walking down the hall and they'd be like, 'Chip, how are you doing?' I'd be like, 'What? …

Public art will be displayed outside the Russell Road elementary school through May 15.
Maury Elementary School fifth-graders painted more than 50 panels now on display along Russell Road and W. Masonic View Avenue inspired by the quilts of the Underground Railroad. The public art display is timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The work honors the courage of slaves who risked their lives to escape to freedom. Students studied the Underground Railroad quilt codes in Bettye Stroud’s “The Patchwork Path: A Quilt Map to Freedom.” Students learned the meaning of different patterns—which offered warnings and hints along the way—before selecting a pattern that was meaningful to them. The paintings will hang through May 15. The paint used was purchased through a grant from the Maury PTA.

Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow stars in the third installment of the Marvel comics hero movie. Here's where to see it near Del Ray, reviews and more info.
Iron Man 3 has arrived, and reviews seem to be positive — mostly. If there's a consensus, it's this: The movie is better than "Iron Man 2." RottenTomatoes.com, as of mid-morning Friday, rated Iron Man 3 77 percent "fresh." Here's what a few reviews had to say: Patch's own Cinema Siren has a review here. She says: With its mix of magnetic superstar power, exciting action and strong character development, Iron Man 3 has a good chance of making new Marvel fans and big dollars, making it the movie to beat this summer at the box office, and making the first big anticipated release the first mega-success of the year. The New York Times review of "Iron Man 3" says this: The story takes place after the events of “Marvel’s The Avengers” and a …
