Why Are MLB Scouts Flocking to Del Ray?

T.C. Williams senior Alec Grosser has emerged as a major league pitching prospect.

Major League Baseball pitching scouts are flocking to Simpson Stadium Park in Del Ray this spring to see T.C. Williams High School right-hander Alec Grosser.

The lanky pitcher emerged as a big-league prospect in July following a commanding outing in the Commonwealth Games in Salem, Va., according to The Washington Post.

Despite committing to play for George Mason University, Grosser didn’t draw much notice from talent evaluators until the July game where his pitches tickled the mid-90-mph range, baffled hitters with late movement and sent scouts into a frenzy.

“A year ago, if someone had told me I’d be in a spot like this, I would have been like, ‘What are you talking about?’” Grosser told The Washington Post.

Grosser, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 195 pounds, has since been contacted by 29 of 30 major league teams and has a sports attorney advising him ahead of June’s MLB draft.

“He’s a very athletic kid, and that’s what you’re looking for,” Atlanta Braves scout Gene Kerns told The Washington Post. “He’s got a great body. He has a loose arm that works good, and he’s got all the makings of a young man that when he gains another 15 or 20 pounds in three or four years he could really be an impact-type guy.”

Grosser, who has started at quarterback for the Titans on the football field since he was a sophomore, demonstrated his pitching motion in a video produced by The Post (click on it above to watch).

The Titans, who are 5-3 on the season, host West Potomac on Friday night at Simpson. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.

The Titans play all their home games at Simpson Stadium Park. Check out their schedule on the school’s athletics website.
