Voter Registration Deadline is 5 p.m. Monday

Alexandria residents have until May 20 to register to participate in June 11 Democratic primary.

Residents of Alexandria must register to vote by 5 p.m. Monday, May 20 to participate in the June 11 Democratic primary for Virginia lieutenant governor and attorney general.

Democrats Ralph Northam and Aneesh Chopra are seeking the nomination for lieutenant governor. Democrats Mark Herring and Justin Fairfax are seeking the nomination for attorney general.

The primary ballot does not include the office of governor—Terry McAuliffe was the only Democratic candidate who filed, so he will be the Democratic Party nominee.

Voter registration applications submitted by mail must be postmarked on or before May 20. The same deadline is in effect for Virginia voters who are registered, but have moved within the City of Alexandria, or within Virginia.

Voter cards for new or transferred registrants will be mailed within one week of the registration date.

There is no Republican primary this June. Republicans will nominate their candidates for lieutenant governor and attorney general at their state convention May 17-18 in Richmond. Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is the Republican candidate for governor.

Absentee voting for the primary began April 26.

Checking Registration

Alexandria voters who are not certain if they are registered at their current address may go to alexandriava.gov/Elections and click “Am I Registered and Where Do I Vote?” or call the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration at 703-746-4050.

New Registrations 

The Alexandria Office of Voter Registration offers the following voter registration methods:

  • Complete the application online at alexandriava.gov/Elections, print it, sign it and mail it to the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration, 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22314. Applications must be postmarked on or before May 20.
  • Register in person at the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration or at Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Customer Service Centers.

Address Updates

Virginia registered voters who need to update their addresses may:

  • Complete the form on the back of their old Voter I.D. card and mail or fax it to the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration; or,
  • Complete a new voter registration application and mail or fax it to the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration.

Absentee Voting

Absentee voting is now in progress. Visit alexandriava.gov/Elections or call 703-746-4050 for information on absentee voting and other election information, including sample ballots and precinct information. 

Other Deadlines

Deadlines are approaching for the general election in November. Independent candidates for statewide office or House of Delegates have until June 11 to file their candidacy papers with the State Board of Elections. Independent candidates for sheriff or commonwealth’s attorney have until June 11 to file their candidacy papers with the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration and Elections.
