USPS Schedules Community Meeting About Del Ray Post Office

Meeting to address community concerns about office's potential closure.

The United States Postal Service is holding a meeting on Wednesday to discuss community concerns surrounding the potential closure of the Mt. Vernon Avenue post office.

The meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at George Washington Middle School.

In July, the USPS announced that the Del Ray post office was one of more than 3,700 around the country being examined for potential closure in a “right-sizing” effort. USPS said the need for that many locations has diminished as customers conduct their postal business online or elsewhere.

U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th) sent a letter to the chairman of the Postal Regulatory Commission in September urging that the office located at 1908 Mt. Vernon Avenue remain open.

In the letter sent to Ruth Goldway dated Sept. 16, Moran argued the “theoretical savings generated by closing the facility do not justify the costs to the community that would result from a closure.”
