Represenatives from the U.S. Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Marathon honored Mount Vernon Community School Thursday with a Healthy School Award for participating in last year's Healthy Kids Fun Run.
Students also received a visit from marathon mascot Miles the bulldog. The school received a $1,000 check from marathon partnering company Sodexo Operations Inc.
This year is the first the school has won the award. It is one of five schools in Alexandria and Springfield to receive the Healthy Schools Award this winter. Marathon spokeswoman Tami Faram said 115 students from Mount Vernon particpated in the fun run.
