MV Big Flea Set for Saturday

Fundraising event benefits Mount Vernon Community School in Del Ray.

The MV Big Flea, a huge fundraiser for the Mount Vernon Community School PTA, is almost here.

On Saturday, May 4, at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, the gymnasium will be filled with used goods collected over the last several months for a huge flea market.

All the money raised will fund education enrichment activities for students and help teachers purchase classroom supplies.

The Big Flea begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, when shoppers can pay a $10 early admission fee to get first crack at the merchandise. No entrance fee is needed after 8 a.m.

The market will close briefly at 10:30 a.m. when organizers announce the winner of the Flea Car donated by Jack Taylor's Alexandria Toyota, which will be raffled off. Tickets for the car cost $10 apiece (or three for $25) and will be available for purchase on Thursday at the First Thursday street festival.

Following the car raffle, everything at the market is half-priced.

The Flea will close again briefly at noon then reopen at 12:15 p.m. At this time, everything at the market is free until it closes at 12:45 p.m.

This year's event will also include an arts festival outside.
