Sheriff's Office Lends A Hand

When the Community Partners for Children needed to ensure the in-need students of Alexandria received the school supplies that had been collected for them, the organization called the Sheriff's Office.

The school supply project was developed by the Del Ray-based charity, which has collected and distributed supplies to disadvantaged students since 1991. Among the leaders of the 2010 project were Pat Miller, Patty Moran and Carol Bailey.

Several hundred disadvantaged children in the Alexandria Public School system received backpacks filled with school supplies following the Labor Day holiday.

For the second consecutive year, the Alexandria Sheriff's Office delivered the supplies. A total of 20 deputies participated in the deliveries.

"The men and women of the Sheriff's Office welcome every opportunity to help our young people, particularly those less fortunate than ourselves," said Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, a Del Ray resident himself. "We are proud to assist Community Partners for Children for the second straight year in this extremely worthwhile endeavor."
