Sen. Crapo Pleads Guilty to DUI Charge in Alexandria Court

Republican lawmaker from Idaho was arrested in Alexandria's Del Ray neighborhood Dec. 23 when he was spotted running a red light by a local police officer.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA -- Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho pleaded guilty to a driving under the influence charge in court Friday morning in Virginia.

He was fined $250 and his driver’s license was suspended for one year, according to Politico. Prosecutors dropped a charge of failing to obey a traffic signal. The DUI charge is a misdemeanor in Virginia.

The Republican lawmaker also must participate in a program on alcohol safety. He will not have to serve a 180-day jail sentence if he has good behavior.

After the hearing Friday, Crapo said outside the Alexandria City courthouse that he had been drinking a vodka and tonic at home the night of the arrest, but couldn't sleep and so went out for a drive, according to AP.

Crapo was not expected to contest the charges stemming from his arrest on Dec. 23 in Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood.

According to Crapo’s official biography he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which prohibits alcohol consumption among members.

"Crapo said outside the Alexandria City courthouse that he had been drinking a vodka and tonic at home"

More like 8 gin and tonics or a glass of gin. His bloodwork showed a 0.14 blood alcohol content. It takes a 200 pound guy about 8 shots/beers/or wine in two hours to reach a 0.14

Wait a minute. If he was drinking at his home, then why are reports saying that he resides on Capitol hill.

Are we to assume he couldn't sleep and decided to take a drive over the 14th Street bridge from Capitol hill? I do not believe his explanation for a minute.

Del Ray isn't exactly a place one stumbles into while just taking a drive. Something is just strange here.

According to the Post, he "drank vodka tonics alone in his Capitol Hill apartment on the night of Dec. 22, climbed into a 1999 white Jeep and took a half-hour drive past the monuments and into Alexandria".

How do you "drive past the monuments" and wind up at Mt Vernon and Hume in Del Ray? You are right Raine there is a lot more to this story than what is being reported.

He should have shut up. He was probably drinking with a mistress or something similarly embarrassing.

Please remind us what former APD Police Chief David Baker was doing in Arlington when he was arrested?

This is why you will not have stiffer penalties for drunk drivers. Most politicians drive drunk and don't want to cut their own throats.

The WaPo reports that he had consumed vodka at his home on the Hill and then couldn't sleep so he "went out for a drive." I call BS. Who was he visiting in or around DelRay or the rest of Alexandria?

Sad that you're so focused on something (Chappaquiddick) that happened when most of us weren't even alive and has nothing to do with a right-wing teetotaler getting caught driving drunk (TODAY in our city) without a believable reason for driving where he was pulled over. Can you please stay on topic and offer anything of value to the discussion? (I’m guessing not).

NOt 'so focused' on anything OT just pointing out that Sen. Crapo deserves kudos for taking responsibility for his actions much like Congressman Kennedy (D) did when he was arrested for DUI.

Yeah, I thought so...

This guy doesn't deserve "kudos" for anything. He hasn't apologized to the citizens of DC, Alexandria, and (probably) Arlington for putting our lives in danger because of his reckless behavior. And I think that we all know that he is very likely covering up stuff that would further tarnish his moral facade.

How many people are killed by drunk drivers every year, yet it is a misdemeanor? $250 fine?
But if Joe Citizen was smoking a joint, OMG, $5000 bail, jail time, etc. What a bunch of hypocrits!

Yep, and in America where more and more prisions are private business, you`d find a good stiff sentance for those pesky pot smokers!

Let's see if I got this correct. Drinking violates his church law. Drinking and driving violates civil law. Just wanted to make sure.

Completely agree. I suspect that if the press responsibly investigates this they will find an iceberg of hypocrisy here.
